The Occult Anatomy of Man, Part 4
In Part 4 of The Occult Anatomy of Man, the exploration descends into what ancient traditions called the infernal worlds. Based on the teachings of Manly P. Hall, this lecture reframes hell, demons, and damnation as inner physiological and psychological realities, not distant supernatural realms.
Here, occult anatomy reveals how the lowest centers of the human body correspond to density, crystallization, passion, and transformation. What religion once described as punishment, esoteric philosophy understands as a necessary stage in evolution.
The Throne at the Base of the Spine
At the base of the spinal column lies what ancient symbolism described as the throne of the Lord of Form. Known across cultures as Jehovah or Shiva, this force governs structure, geometry, and embodiment.
This power is not evil. It builds bodies. It crystallizes substance around invisible lines of force. Geometry becomes skeleton, bone, and stone. Yet the same force that creates form also leads to rigidity. When matter becomes too dense to respond to spiritual impulse, decay and death follow.
In occult terms, birth itself is a kind of death, and death is an awakening into a freer state.
The Lower World as the Tomb of Spirit
Mystics taught that incarnation into physical matter is entry into a tomb. Compared to subtler planes, the earth world is slow, heavy, and limiting. Time and distance act as prison bars, restricting the freedom of consciousness.
This idea appears universally as the underworld, the pit, or the abyss. Figures like Yama or Typhon symbolize not external demons, but the animal nature within man. Those ruled by appetite, fear, hatred, and desire do not need punishment imposed from outside. They generate their own hell through imbalance.
Hell as a State of Consciousness
According to occult philosophy, there are three worlds in which a human being may dwell:
- The mental world, shaped by thought, ideals, and aspiration
- The human world, defined by habit, routine, and anxiety
- The animal world, ruled by passion, fear, and impulse
Hell is not beneath the earth. It exists wherever consciousness becomes trapped in the lowest of these states.
Blood, Form, and Individual Destiny
A striking theme in this lecture is the symbolism of blood. Each person’s blood crystallizes into unique geometric patterns, encoding character, destiny, and evolutionary position. The story of the soul is written in the bloodstream.
Esoterically, spirit could not fully enter the body until red blood appeared. Before that, consciousness hovered near the form, tethered by an invisible thread. The emergence of red blood marked the boundary between vegetable, animal, and human life.
The liver is presented as the key organ of this process, giving rise to powerful symbolic associations across myth, language, and religion.
Lucifer, Mars, and the Red Fire
Lucifer, whose name means “bearer of light”, is interpreted here not as a devil, but as a symbol of blood fire and vital heat. Red, the color of blood, stimulates, excites, and inflames. It is linked to Mars, the archetype of war, anger, and passion.
The red glow often perceived clairvoyantly at the base of the spine represents hatred, desire, and unresolved force. This image gave rise to the myth of hellfire. Humanity carries its infernal world within itself.
The Alchemy of Color
Occult physiology assigns deep meaning to color:
- Red symbolizes physical vitality, passion, and temptation
- Yellow represents soul life, illumination, and the golden aura of saints
- Blue corresponds to mind, peace, and the presence of the Father principle
These colors are not decorative. They describe states of consciousness and flows of energy within the body. The golden halo of saviors reflects illumination pouring from the third ventricle. Blue gathers in the pineal gland as spiritual calm and clarity.
Alchemy as Inner Physiology
Medieval alchemists concealed occult anatomy beneath the imagery of furnaces, retorts, and vessels. Their true laboratory was the human body.
- The furnace was the lower centers
- The fire burned at the base of the spine
- The chimney was the spinal cord
- The distillation occurred in the brain
This was not chemical experimentation, but operative spirituality, a practical science of inner transformation inherited from Eastern traditions.
From Infernal to Illumined
The infernal worlds are not places to be feared. They are stages to be understood and transcended. The same force that binds consciousness to matter becomes, when purified and raised, the power of illumination.
Salvation, in this system, is physiological and spiritual at once. It depends on the intelligent use of life forces within the body and the gradual refinement of consciousness.
Why the Infernal Worlds Matter
This teaching restores coherence to myths of hell, demons, fire, and judgment. It reveals them as symbolic languages describing the lower centers of human nature and the process of transformation.
To understand the infernal worlds is not to dwell in darkness, but to gain mastery over it.
