The Occult Anatomy of Man, Part 3
In Part 3 of The Occult Anatomy of Man, we arrive at one of the most powerful symbols in esoteric anatomy: the spinal column. Drawing on the teachings of Manly P. Hall, this lecture reveals the spine as the living bridge between heaven and earth, the axis upon which consciousness ascends and descends.
Far from being a purely mechanical structure, the spine is presented as a sacred ladder, a winding path of initiation, and the channel through which spiritual fire transforms the human being.
The Spine as the Sacred Ladder
Ancient traditions describe the spinal column as a ladder of thirty three segments, protecting the spinal cord and linking the highest and lowest centers of the body. This ladder appears throughout religious symbolism as:
- Jacob’s Ladder
- The winding road
- The stairway to heaven
- The serpent
- The wand or scepter of power
In Hindu philosophy, the spine connects the generative centers below with the divine centers of the brain above, making it the pathway of spiritual ascent.
Ida, Pingala, and Sushumna
Esoteric anatomy teaches that three subtle channels run along the spine:
- Ida, the lunar and receptive current
- Pingala, the solar and active current
- Sushumna, the central channel of equilibrium
In Greek symbolism, these are represented by the caduceus of Hermes, a winged staff with two serpents spiraling around a central rod. The wings symbolize the two hemispheres of the brain, while the central staff corresponds to the Sushumna channel.
This symbol encapsulates the entire mystery of spiritual development.
Kundalini and the Serpent Power
Kundalini is described as a serpentine force, dormant at the base of the spine. When awakened and drawn upward through the central channel, it activates successive nerve centers along the spine and ultimately illumines the brain.
Manly P. Hall emphasizes that this force is both illuminating and dangerous. Like the serpent that symbolizes it, Kundalini can heal or destroy depending on preparation and balance. This is why authentic traditions guarded this knowledge carefully and warned against reckless experimentation.
Nerve Ganglia and Sacred Cities
Along the spine are nerve ganglia and plexuses that ancient cultures encoded into religious narratives:
- The sacral plexus was symbolized as Sodom and Gomorrah
- The kidney region was associated with the city of Tarsus
- The solar plexus became the center of the human world
These symbolic cities describe stages in the ascent of consciousness rather than historical locations.
The lotus blossoms of Eastern tradition represent these nerve centers. Each lotus has a specific number of petals corresponding to the nerves branching from it, and each reflects a higher center located in the brain.
The Solar Plexus and the Human World
The solar plexus occupies a central position in occult anatomy. It links the unconscious life below with conscious awareness above and governs semi conscious perception.
This center plays a crucial role in distinguishing mediumship from clairvoyance.
Mediumship vs Clairvoyance
According to this teaching:
- Mediumship operates through the solar plexus and involves passivity and external control
- Clairvoyance operates through the brain and pineal gland and is the result of disciplined inner development
The medium opens themselves to external influences, often at great psychological and physical risk. The clairvoyant, by contrast, raises the spinal fire into the brain through self mastery, knowledge, and balance.
The difference between the two is described as half the length of the spinal column, symbolizing the difference between descent and ascent, darkness and illumination.
The Spine and Self Mastery
The spinal column unites the brain and the generative system. As consciousness evolves, this connection becomes more direct, requiring strict conservation and regulation of life energies.
Every organ, according to occult philosophy, has both a physical function and a spiritual intelligence. The human body is not a machine, but a living universe governed by consciousness.
This idea is reinforced by the teachings of Paracelsus, who described nature spirits as intelligences guiding bodily functions under higher cosmic laws.
The Human Body as a Living Universe
Manly P. Hall concludes this section by expanding the perspective outward. Just as the human body contains worlds within worlds, humanity itself exists as a microcosm within a vastly greater cosmic organism.
We live in a middle world, suspended between infinite greatness and infinite smallness. As consciousness grows, so too does the scope of the world we inhabit and understand.
The spinal column stands at the center of this mystery, the axis through which life descends into form and rises again toward spirit.
Why the Spinal Column Matters
Understanding the spine symbolically reveals why it appears in nearly every sacred tradition. It is the pathway of initiation, the serpent of wisdom, and the living ladder of evolution.
To study the spinal column occultly is to study the mechanics of spiritual awakening itself.
